How, in Greek mythology, the peacocks got these beautiful feathers with an eye on it is explained by the myth of the upper god Zeus, practising adultery with the beautiful Io, and Zeus's jealous wife Hera who sent Hermes to kill Argus who guarded, looking around with his 100 eyes, the bull in captivity, the transformation (metamorphosis) of Io by either Hera or Zeus. When Argus was killed by Hermes, Hera took the 100 eyes of Argus and put
these as a remembrance in the tail of a peacock, where they would always
remain to be seen.
